Laury Oaks, PhD, MA, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Feminist Studies and an affiliated faculty member in the departments of Sociology and Anthropology at UC Santa Barbara (UCSB). She is a faculty ambassador for the UC GHI Women’s Health, Gender, and Empowerment Center of Expertise. Dr. Oaks’ research focuses on reproductive and sexual health politics, and she has publications focused on studies she conducted in Japan, Ireland, and the U.S. Her most recent book, Giving Up Baby: Safe Haven Laws, Motherhood, and Reproductive Justice, explores the politics of abortion and adoption surrounding the popularization of baby safe haven laws in the U.S. Her current research analyzes the feminist women’s health movement’s contraception and abortion self-help practices, and she enjoys conducting the collaborative, multi-campus “UC Speaks Up” study.
